ISLAMABAD - The only football ground in the F-8 sector of Islamabad, situated in the F-8 markaz, is being used as a parking lot for private companies in adjacent plazas. Even though the CDA has done a commendable job in setting up new parks and sports facilities around the capital, the negligence in this regard comes as an unpleasant surprise. This football ground comes under the administration of the CDA Sports directorate, which does not seem to be making any efforts in maintenance of the facilities it sets up. Till a few months back, this ground used to be one of the most happening football grounds in the city as youngsters and students from all over sector F-8 used to play football here in the evenings. A student from one of the nearby private institutes, which usually lack sports facilities and have to use public grounds, has started a petition in which he is trying to get as many signatures as possible to send to the concerned CDA officials as a mass complaint from the public. We have to bring this negligence to the attention of the concerned authorities, and we have decided to take constructive steps like people in a civil society should. Going to another ground would be giving consent to the illegal use of this ground as a parking lot, said Basit, the student behind the petition. Another student, a school-going football enthusiast, complained My friends and I used to come to this ground every evening after school to play football. But now we have to go to grounds in other sectors, and our parents are not very happy with letting us go that far in this situation. The lack of parking facilities in a city with wide avenues and open spaces is deplorable. The authorities must build parking plazas in all the major commercial areas of the city so that there is ample parking space without disruption of healthy activities such as sports for youngsters in this case.
