ISLAMABAD - The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Punjab government to recover the Kauray Khan Trust land from land mafia by January 5, 2017.

Sardar Kauray Khan Jatoi had bequeathed 83,000 kanals of land for the welfare of the people of Muzaffargarh district but the land was being mismanaged by the government officials.

A two-judge bench comprising Justice Ejaz Afzal and Justice Sheikh

Azmat Saeed heard the case and expressed annoyance over not compliance the court order. Justice Azmat asked the additional advocate general

(AAG) Punjab as why the land could not be recovered from the mafia so far.

The bench dismissed the Punjab government’s report regarding the instant

matter. Justice Azmat remarked that state writ has weakened in

Punjab as the administration seemed helpless against the land mafia.

The Punjab government counsel informed that the political persons have encroached upon the Kauray Khan Trust land. Justice Azmat asked then the court should keep mum over the issue.

The lawyer told that Rs5 million fraud committed in the Trust and the matter had been referred to the National Accountability Bureau. He further informed the police have also lodged an FIR against the accused.

Justice Azmat said there should have been 100 FIRs registered against the culprits. The judge inquired why the government officials involved in corruption have not been sent to jail so far. He stated that the

Trust 10,000 acres land has been given on contract at Rs4,000 per acre, adding the money however was going in the pockets of Muzaffargarh DCO and tehsildar. He said the Punjab government should outsource the land if it could not look after it.

The judge said as the state writ is weak therefore the district administration seemed helpless. He said nowhere the rate of contract was Rs4000 per acre.

The court directed the Punjab government to recover the Kauray Trust land by January 5, 2017. The AAG has been ordered to submit a detailed report in this connection. The court also directed Anti-Corruption Judge Muzaffargarh to decide the land encroachment cases of the Trust as soon as possible.
