The first Major Shaheed of Operation Zarb-e-Azb

Irshad Hussain Shah (father) - Pakistan armed forces are fighting for the integrity, solidarity, defence and peace of Pakistan. In order to achieve these tasks/objectives on one hand army fights against terrorists and their facilitators who are well trained, well equipped and well paid by our neighbouring country and others while on the other hand against Indian atrocities on LoC. We are thankful to Almighty God who has granted courage to our jawans and officers of army to fight against our enemies with bravery, courage, loyalty and patriotism successfully in unfavourable circumstances. We have countless splendid examples of our jawans and officers who fought with exemplary bravery, gallantly and embraced Shahadat.

With the foregoing aims and objectives for the defence of the country, Major Wasif Hussain Shah embraced Shahadat along with Subedar Jahangir and three other jawans in Dattakhel NWA on 15 Nov 2014 while fighting against about 400 well-organised militants.

Major Wasif was born on 2nd may 1981 at Tarbela Dam. His father was serving at that time as an officer in WAPDA Tarbela. Major Wasif is from the descendents of Syed Kasteer Gul famous as Shaikh Rahmakar Hazrat Kaka Sahib at Nowshera. Kaka Sahb is from the tribe of Imam Hussain (PBUH). The forefathers of Major Wasif travelled to Hazara, Kashmir and Swat for preaching Islam and settled at Shaikhabad, Mansehra. Major Wasif’s father is a retired deputy director and former asst professor of Hazara University Mansehra.

Major Wasif started his early education from Public School Tarbela. He passed his FSc exam with good marks from FG College Mangla Cantt. He was a good speaker, intelligent with smiling face. He wanted to join army. Major Wasif during his college life was a good bodybuilder, weightlifter, swimmer and horse rider. After completing his FSc he joined 106 PMA long course, from where he passed out in 2002. He joined 32 Baloch Regiment as a commissioned officer. He served at Pirkhanthee, Bagh (AK), Gujranwala, Balakot, Sakrdu, Swat and Kharian. He was posted at Swat to participate in Operation Rah-e-Nijat. At Swat Major Wasif performed his duty with devotion, dedication and resilience. The services rendered by him during Operation Rah-e-Nijat were also appreciated by his seniors.

Major Wasif also served in Congo under the flag of UN Peace Mission with exceptional courage, zeal and spirit. He also constructed a mosque at Manvanga (Congo).

Major Wasif was on 2 years attachment with Azad Kashmir regimental centre, Mansar camp Attock. But after about ten months of his service at AKRC Attock he was directed to report to his unit 32 Baloch at North Waziristan on transfer of one Major. Major Wasif reported for duty on 20th July 2014 in NWA as commander of Bravo company. He commanded various operations very successfully with courage, devotion and spirit during Operation Zarb-e-Azb.

Zarm Sar ridge in Dattakhel area was very sensitive area and a safe haven for terrorists. Army was planning to clear this area since long. This difficult and core vital task was assigned to Major Wasif on 25th Oct 2014. Major Wasif and his company cleared and occupied this difficult and farthest, highest and a safe home of terrorists. Due to this categorical and heroic success he is called the conqueror of Zarm Sar. After occupying Zarm Sar area Major Wasif established three posts and continued to strengthen the defence position.

On 15 Oct 2014 at about 1700 hours about 400 terrorists from different directions attacked the post Zarm 3. Major Wasif along with four soldiers moved very quickly and promptly from his own post (Zarm 2) to defend his area and to save the lives of his soldiers at Zarm 3. Major Wasif put up intense fight and forced the terrorists to retreat with heavy losses.

Due to firing from multiple directions a few soldiers at Zarm 3 got injured and some of them left the forward positions. Major Wasif disregarding his personal safety engaged the well-equipped terrorists. During the fight the son of the soil received two bullets, one in his left shoulder and the other in clavicle. But he continued to fight gallantly. At about 19:30 hours Major Wasif was hit by splinters of RPG fired by a terrorist from a nearest place that pierced his upper jaw and neck resulting in his Shahadat.

After Shahadat of Major Wasif, Subedar Jahangir fought with bravery and gallantly. He also embraced Shahadat after in fighting with terrorists. Sepoy Nazir Mohammad, Sepoy Ayaz and Sepoy Javed also embraced martyrdom during this operation.

I salute my son for his bravery, gallantry, sacrificing his life for the country and fighting for his jawans posted at Zarm 3. On extraordinary show of bravery Major Wasif was conferred with Sitara-i-Basalat.
