KARACHI - Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has dispelled the impression that present PPP-led government is following the policies previous regime and vowed to provide jobs and shelter to the masses as promised by Shaheed party chairperson Benazir Bhutto. He was addressing the launching ceremony of a book, written by former PPP Senator Sajjad Bukhari, titled "The last 72 days of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto" held on Friday at Karachi Arts Council. Editor The Nation Arif Nizami was the chief guest at the ceremony while Sindh Information Minister Shazia Marri, Sajjad Bukhari, Qazi Asad Abad, Executive Director APNS Dr Tanveer A Tahir, columnist Mushtaq Qureshi, Mukhtar Aqil and President Karachi Press Club Najeeb Ahmed also spoke on the occasion. Syed Qaim Ali Shah said that previous Sindh government of Arbab Ghulam Rahim made the life for political opponents, particularly belonging to the PPP, miserable through illegal arrests and registration of bogus cases against them. He vowed that the present government, despite severe economic crisis, would provide jobs and shelter to the people and also distribute land among poor peasants in the country. He added that PPP government has inherited problems from the previous regime but would face all the challenges by implementing the party manifesto. The CM further said that PPP, in a meeting of its central executive committee, had decided to request the UN for probe into the assassination of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto because the party leaders had no trust in former dictator Pervez Musharraf and his administration. He added that previous rulers had threatened the martyred PPP Chairperson in bid to dissuade her from addressing election rallies on the pretext of security reasons. But Shaheed Benazir Bhutto refused to bow down. Qaim Ali Shah added that he, on the direction of President Asif Ali Zardari, has confirmed all the daily-wage and contractual workers in PIA, Port Qasim and Steel Mills. Speaking on the occasion, Editor The Nation, Arif Nizami said that Shaheed Benazir Bhutto laid the foundation of free press in the country during her two stints in the office. He paid rich tributes to Shaheed PPP Chairperson and asked President Asif Ali Zardari to follow the footsteps his martyred spouse with a view to serve the masses. He said that time has come for the PPP to deliver on its promises made with the people and materialise the dream of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto. Arif Nizami further said that Benazir Bhutto was the champion of freedom of expression and had left a legacy for the present PPP government to act upon. He said that Benazir Bhutto inherited courage from her father Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and always came into power with might of the people. Arif Nizami said that he knew Shaheed Benazir Bhutto since 1986 and held a last meeting with her on 26th December 2007. He said that he was surprised when some critics of Benazir Bhutto wrote that she returned from exile through a deal but they badly failed to understand the real deal which she had made with the masses and sacrificed her life rather than deceiving the people. Paying rich tributes Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, Arif Nizami said that she had foiled all conspiracies of military dictators to split and weaken the PPP. "Even a high-ranking intelligence official one day before the tragic incident of 27th December, tried to convince her to postpone her planned election rally at Liquat Bagh. But it was her courage and political determination that, despite all threats, she addressed a rally there", he added. "After the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, I visited Naudero and met with PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari who showed me the will of the Shaheed party chairperson", Arif Nizami said. "I read the document and it was genuine will of Shaheed PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto in which she had chosen PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari as her political heir", he added. "It is huge responsibility on the shoulder President Asif Ali Zardari to serve the people in accordance with the dreams of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto", Nizami said. Author of the book, Sajjad Bukhari said that Shaheed Benazir Bhutto was also a visionary leader and prolific writer. Other participants also paid rich tributes to Shaheed PPP Chairperson and urged the party leadership to act upon her policies to serve the masses.
