LAYYAH-The Election Commission of Pakistan nullified the election of chairman, vice chairman and councillors on special seats of Municipal Committee Chowk Azam here on Tuesday.

The decision was taken on the application of PTI Councillor Adnan Nazeer Alvi. The PTI councillor had filed an application against the election of chairman, vice chairman and councillor special seats of the MC Chowk Azam.

During local bodies elections held on 5 September 2015, out of 12 seats of MC Chowk Azam, both the PTI and the PML-N had won six seats each. Later, two PTI councillors - Adnan Nazeer Alvi and Sajid Niazi lost their seats in the recounting.

Mr Alvi challenged the Election Commission decision regarding his de-seating in the Lahore High Court. The High Court, after hearing the case, restored election of PTI Councillor Adnan Nazeer Alvi. Later, the PTI filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the election of chairman, vice chairman and special seats of the MC. The apex court, in its verdict on the petition, nullified the election.

In the light of the verdict, the Election Commission notified the nullification of the election and ordered re-election. The PTI local leaders celebrated the decision as victory of truth. The party workers distributed sweets and danced to drumbeat. Talking to The Nation, Adnan Nazeer Alvi said that the verdict is in fact victory of the law and constitution.
