PM-proposed names rejected twice by Nisar

ISLAMABAD The matter regarding early appointment of the Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was once again delayed as the person proposed for the slot by Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani was rejected by the Leader of the Opposition with the request that some non-partisan person should be appointed as the head of the accountability bureau. Sources in the Parliament informed TheNation that it was the second name rejected by the Leader of Opposition Ch Nisar Ali Khan taking the plea that the person proposed for the slot was not apolitical nor non-partisan. Sources informed that earlier, Federal Minister for Law and Justice Dr Babar Awan met Opposition Leader Ch Nisar and on behalf of Prime Minister Gilani proposed the name of Justice(R) Mukhtar Junejo to be made Chairman NAB but Ch Nisar after consultation with his party leaders rejected the name and requested the PM in black and white to appoint a person of impeccable character for the slot which would be acceptable to all. Later, Law Minister Dr Babar Awan came up with another name but the reply of Leader of Opposition was once again the same that only a non-partisan and a man of impeccable character could be given such an important slot. The sources in the government informed that they were not happy the way Leader of Opposition was rejecting the persons they were proposing for the slot of Chairman NAB and it was expected that PM Gilani would himself discuss the matter with the Opposition Leader in a day or two. On the other hand, the government was also in a difficult situation due to growing pressure from the Supreme Court, which had given a clear direction to the government to fill the slot of Chairman NAB at the earliest. It is pertinent to mention here that for the appointment of the NAB Chairman, it was mandatory on Prime Minister to consult Leader of Opposition and the slot would be filled with a candidate mutually acceptable to the government and the Opposition.
