ISLAMABAD (APP) - Dr. Muhammad Shoaib Suddle, has taken suo moto notice on a news item and directed the FBR to submit report within 15 days so that the grievances of the taxpayers could be addressed as per law. According to a statement of the Federal Tax Ombudaman Secretariat here, the FTO has taken suo moto notice under section 9(1) of the FTO Ordinance, 2000, of the news appearing in a section of the press. In the news item, it was reported that Regional Tax Office, Karachi has stopped payment worth millions of Sales Tax refund claims of taxpayers which has created serious financial difficulties for the business community, Federal Tax Ombudsman Dr. Muha-mmad Shoaib Suddle, has directed the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to submit report within 15 days so that the grievances of the taxpayers could be addressed as per law. It will be pertinent to mention that while disposing of different complaints of inordinate delay in settlement of refund/rebate/duty draw back claims of exporters, the FTO had directed the FBR to ensure expeditious disposal of the exporters claims and thus 113,957 such claims involving hundreds of millions of taxpayers money have been settled over the past few months under suo moto notices of the Honourable FTO. The export Collectorate of Customs House Karachi has reported settlement 55524 Duty Drawback Claims involving Rs.1007.325 million during the past six month period from April to August, 2010. The PACCS Collectorate of Custom House Karachi has reported settlement of 58,433 Duty Drawback Claims involving refund amount of millions of rupees for the same six months period from March to August. Similarly, the four-year long outstanding dispute of 805 cases of bank guarantees held up in Custom House Sambrial, and 400 cases of Sales Tax refund pertaining to RTO Sialkot have been resolved by FBR in response to suo moto notices of the Federal Tax Ombudsman.
