No security arrangements for Juma congregations

LAHORE - No security arrangements were made on more than 15,00 mosques in the City during Juma prayers due to what the police claimed the shortage of policemen and owing to the deployment of a large number of police force to guard the elite class, The Nation learnt on Friday. Most of the mosques had not even a single policeman, leaving the thousands of people vulnerable to possible terror attacks, as the most of the mosques fall in C Category. Police have divided the mosques in three categories including A, B and C Category. The first category contains prominent mosques like Data Darbar Mosque, Badshahi Mosque and the second category of mosques include the prominent but small in size located at prominent points in the City. The mosques located in far-flung areas especially in small streets which cover not more than two marla place fall in third category. According to police record of main three divisions of the City, Cantt Division contains 42 mosques in category A, 86 in category B and 640 mosques in category C. The ratio in City division is different as 39 mosques fall in category A, 148 in B and 605 in C. In Model Town division, out of total 284 mosques, 63 fall in category A, 76 in B while 284 mosques fall in category C. Some of the Overseas Branches, which deal with law and order and security arrangements in concerned divisions, in-charges including Sub-Inspector Mohammad Asif, SI Mohammad Qasim, SI Tauqir Shah and SI Abdul Rasheed, however, claimed that security had been intensified for Juma prayers. City Police Chief Aslam Tareen told this scribe few days back that that Lahore Police contained only 12,000 policemen in Operation Wing. Shortage of policemen is the major issue. Lahore Police (Operations) spokesman Nayyab Haider said that almost 6000 police contingents were deployed on sensitive mosques during Juma prayers. According to security plan, he said that deployment of police force was made on locality-wise. If the area is considered sensitive then extra force is deputed, otherwise normal security arrangements were made in the area, he added. None of the SPs including SP Cantt Javed Qamar, SP Model Town Rana Ayyaz Saleem and SP Saddar Zeshan Asghar were available when contacted for their versions regarding security arrangements. Moreover OSI Branch of Saddar Division official Azam flatly refused to speak over the issue. The SP has strictly directed to remain silent if someone ask you regarding any issue, he added.
