Rawalpindi - Regional Police Officer (RPO) Akhter Umer Hayyat Lalayka on Wednesday suspended three police officers of Gujar Khan on account of keeping a hardcore criminal in a private torture cell and helping him in fleeing police custody.

The suspended police officers included Station House Officer (SHO) Police Station Gujar Khan Akbar Abbas, Sub-Inspector Malik Arshad and Head Constable Luqman Sarwar. The criminal Javed escaped from a private torture cell of Gujar Khan police on Tuesday morning, putting Rawalpindi police on toes and spreading a wave of terror and panic in the locality.

According to sources, the RPO taking strict action on the blunder  placed 3 police officers under suspension, besides initiating departmental inquiry against them. Inspector Arif Gondal has been appointed as new SHO of PS Gujar Khan.

A well-placed source revealed to The Nation that Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid took serious notice of the issue and asked RPO to punish the police officers. The source, however, expressed his deep concern over police boss for sparing a SI Asghar who had a leading role in fleeing the criminal from police custody. The source added that Head Constable Luqman Sarwar played a major role in breaking a deal between police and Javed’s accomplices.

Earlier, a police team nabbed Javed Iqbal alias Jedi from Toba Tek Singh some 17 days ago and kept him in a private torture cell instead of locking up him in police station and producing before the court despite the fact that Jedi was a proclaimed offender.
