Shale gas is a natural gas that is found within shale formations. Shale makes up more than half of earth’s sedimentary rock. Its exploration and production have the potential to transform Pakistan’s crippled economy and resolve unprecedented energy crisis. Shale gas is not only abundant in Pakistan but also cheap and environment friendly. Pakistan consumes 100% natural gas that it produces, so shale gas may be an area of future growth in Pakistan.

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) has estimated shale gas reserves of 105 trillion cubic feet (TCF) within Pakistan. The sedimentary basin area of Pakistan is approximately 665500 sq.km, with shale formation that have a potential of yielding shale oil and gas. I request to the minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, to carry out a detailed assessment of Upper, Middle , Lower Indus, Balochistan and offshore basins regarding sufficient detail of shale gas reserves in Pakistan. Experiences of Poland and China show that geological and other challenges may lead to a slow start in production. However, if Pakistan makes concerted and dedicated efforts, the same obstacles may be transformed into opportunities.
