MOSCOW - UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid is set to address the cabinet with a proposal to allow migrants from the European Union to enter the United Kingdom without any limits for 30 months if the sides to the Brexit talks fail to reach an agreement, media reported on Monday.

The Times newspaper reported that Javid would attend the cabinet meeting later in the day where he would put forward a proposal to keep the UK borders open for EU citizens for over two years in order to protect the economy.

According to the news outlet, EU migrants would be allowed to reside in the country after they show their passport and the authorities check their criminal record.

If they want to stay in the country permanently, these migrants would later have to apply for a visa, the newspaper said.

Javid is also expected to tell ministers that EU citizens should not be treated differently from people of other nationalities in the long term perspective, according to the newspaper.

A total of 226,000 EU citizens came to live in the United Kingdom between March 2017 and March 2018, according to the UK Office for National statistics.

The United Kingdom is expected to leave the European Union in March next year, with the parties still facing a number of unresolved issues over post-Brexit arrangements.
