LAHORE - After judicial activism, we are now witnessing activism on the part of Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE), which has arrested more than 400 persons during the period January-March 2009. According to the first quarterly report of the year, ACE registered 669 cases, initiated 3,928 inquiries and arrested 401 officials of the various departments of the province allegedly involved in the corruption. Spokesman of the ACE claimed that the department recovered an amount of more than RS 480 million, which was deposited to the national exchequer. The amount recovered included net cash, indirect recovery and compromised amounts. It merits mentioning that net cash is meant for recovery made in shape of net cash and deposited to public exchequer. Indirect recovery mean, recovery of state land/vehicles and other public assets and compromised amount meant recovery in which the complainant withdraws his complaint after it is addressed. Police remained on top as usual by getting 245 cases registered against its officials, revenue stood second with 181 cases and education department on number three with a total of 42 cases. As per details, apart form 245 cases against police officials, 1486 inquiries were also initiated. Revenue department was also facing 958 inquires while 173 inquiries were now underway against the officials of education department. Cases were also registered against the staff of local government, irrigation and power, excise and taxation and agricultural departments. During the said period, ACE also submitted challans in 177 of the above-mentioned cases to the various courts. Among the arrested persons, also included were the 41 proclaimed offenders. The spokesman also claimed that ACE officials were busy in preparing lists of the corrupt officers performing in various provincial departments and arrests would start soon after the completion of initial investigations. He said DG ACE Tariq Saleem Dogar was very much committed to eliminate corruption from the province, which reflected from the performance of the establishment.
