Water-gagging claims one life

LAHORE A 40-year-old poverty-hit man suffered cardiac arrest and died instantly, shortly after the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) officials removed the water connection at his residence due to non-payment of bills. Local residents said on Monday that Mohammad Riaz was issueless and he was residing in the residential quarter situated in Angori Bagh (2.5 Marla Scheme No 1) along with his wife. His wife used to stitch the clothes to earn livings. On early Monday, some five WASA officials reached his quarter and tried to remove his water connection. The man appealed to the officials not to do so but they misbehaved with him and ultimately disconnected the water supply. Riaz suffered cardiac arrest and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. A good number of local residents gathered outside the residence of the deceased and staged protest demonstration against the WASA management. They said that the officials are taking the poor to task while they are unable to take any action against the well-to-do defaulters. CRUSHED: A 50-year-old woman was crushed to death under a train here in Shahdra area on Monday, police and rescue workers said. Eyewitnesses told the police that the woman, yet to be identified so far, was crossing the railway line near Shahdra station when a train hit her. She died on the spot. The police have removed the body to the morgue for autopsy and are investigating. Gang busted: Investigation Police Badami Bagh on Monday claimed to have arrested six members of Hafiz dacoit gang involved in the incidents of dacoity, robbery and street crimes. The police also recovered one motorcycle, one rickshaw, Rs 30,000, four cell phones as well as illegal weapons from their possession. According to a police spokesman, the arrested bandits have confessed to 19 cases of dacoity, street crimes and robbery during preliminary interrogation. Further investigations are underway.
