THE Perthshire village of Dull is hoping to forge links with a US town called Boring.
The partnership came about after cyclist Elizabeth Leighton, from Dull, pedalled through Boring, Oregon, on a cycling holiday.
News was relayed back to villagers in Dull - who immediately made contact with their US counterparts in an effort to set up a ‘Dull and Boring’ friendship.
Dull community council then received a ‘declaration of sistership’ from officials in Boring, which was named after early resident William H Boring.
Dull councillor Marjorie Keddie said: “This could have real benefits. Everyone has been smiling at the prospect of the eye-catching road sign this will require.”
Dull community council chairman Tommy Pringles added: “It’s bad enough when people stop dead to photograph the signpost for Dull.
“Imagine how many would do a double-take if it said, ‘Welcome to Dull, a sister community of Boring’?” Tourism agency VisitScotland said the move was yet more evidence of the world-famous Scottish “sense of humour”. –WO
