Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Mian Nawaz Sharif Thursday demanded Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to step down from his position after being convicted by the Supreme Court. He held President Asif Ali Zardari responsible for the conviction to the Prime Minister.
Giving his comments on the verdict of the seven member bench of the Supreme Court convicting the Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif said that Mr Gilani should resign from his office and pave way for a new elected prime minister.
"In the light of the verdict, I think PM Gilani should resign immediately rather than prolong the issue," he said.
Nawaz said the President should tell the nation how many more Prime Ministers he would sacrifice. He said by not following the verdict of the apex court, the Prime Minister has violated his oath of office. He held the President and the Prime Minister for the present situation and said it was wrong that those responsible for the problem go scot free while others continue to give sacrifices.
He said the presence of a convicted Prime Minister would be in violation of the privilege of the Parliament.
Nawaz said the government did not spare any chance to ridicule court and its orders. Whenever responsible and dedicated officers were appointed to investigate issues, they were replaced by the people of their own choice.
He said the coalition partners also played their role in increasing political chaos in the country which cannot be accepted. He asked them to tell the nation whether they had gone to the Supreme Court to threaten it or to hide the theft of a thief.
The PML-N Chief said no body is happy over the verdict including the court but the verdict has been given after a great deal of thinking by the honourable court. He said the Prime Minister had asked for it because the court verdicts were not being implemented.
The PML-N leader suggested the government to hold elections immediately and appoint a neutral prime minister who would write the letter to Swiss authorities.
“If the government is willing, the PML (N) would support a caretaker setup for the federal and provincial governments.”
While commenting on SC’s stance he said, "I fully believe the Supreme Court has the high moral ground while the government is standing on the wrong wicket," Nawaz said.
He warned that the country would be in crisis if Mr Gilani dragged the issue anymore. “I suggest him to voluntarily step down”
He must quit his office without causing further crisis, and must announce general elections immediately,”
“The government and its allies must review their role in the politics now,” the two-time prime Minster said.
