Karachi - After years of disconnection from Lyari, a political stronghold of Pakistan People’s Party, the PPP including its Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari and others are all set to address their public gathering at famous Kakri ground, today.

Several PPP gatherings including the wedding Benazir Bhutto with Asif Zardari was held in this ground.

The PPP Co-chairman had arrived to Karachi on Friday to participate in the rally and will be escorted to the ground in strict security.

Although the PPP had won all seats from the area including two provincial seats won by Sania Naz and Javed Nagori and national assembly seat by Shahjehan Baloch, the area did not witness any huge political gathering since a long time due to security concerns.

Two cracker attacks near Kakri ground claimed life of a minor girl and injured several others after the PPP initiated its political activity in the area.

Talking to the Nation, PPP Karachi Division General Secretary Najmi Alam said that it was PPP that has taken steps to end fear from Lyari-that was once considered a battlefield for gangs and no one was able to hold political activities there.

 “PPP had broken idols of fear from the area and the people have come out in large numbers to express their support,” he said adding that all credit goes to Sindh government for giving free hand to law enforcing authorities for their activities.

Special security arrangements had been taken in the area and as many as 6000 police personnel would guard the gathering at Kakri Ground.

The deployment of police personnel had started from Friday and a number of senior police officials, including SSP Javed Jiskani, Fida Hussain, Nasir Aftab, Pir Mohammad Shah, Tarik Dharejo and others have been tasked to look after the arrangements.

 “The deployment is more than the requirement due to multiple threats,” informed SSP South Tarik Dharejo. He said that force will also be deployed in different areas of Lyari to ensure security of residents during the gathering.

Police sources said that gangsters of the areas of Lyari warned people not to participate in the gathering. Authorities, as result, have decided to deploy heavy contingents of law enforces to avoid any untoward incident.

Meanwhile, PPP expects a huge number of supporters from the area, which is located on Pitcher Road, and is able to accommodate around 30,000-35,000 in the ground and 15,000 in adjoining lanes.

The government support for the rally was also evident with roads leading to the ground being repaired and cleaned. Residents of the area were also surprised to see this change and hoped for more development work in the area-that had been ignored.

The party activists had also established camps at in different areas of Lyari and its adjoining areas including at ICI Bridge, Khadda Market, Mirza Adam Khan Road, Gul Muhammad Lane and Cheel Chowk while bill boards depicting local and top leadership, party flags and banners are also on displayed.

All Sindh People Paramedical Staff Welfare Association also organised a three-day free medical camp in Kakri Ground Lyari Town that will continue till 26th April 2015.

Speaking over arrangements in the ground, PPP leader Manzoor Abbas said that a 60 feet long and 30 feet broad stage is also prepared with barbed wires around it.

 “Special arrangements were also made for media men to cover the event along police deployments, walk through gates would also be placed at entry and exit points of the public gathering.

He rubbished the perception that PPP supporters other than Karachi would also participate in the gathering and said that people from Lyari would be participating in the rally while supporters from other parts of the city would also join them.

 “We expect a huge crowd from within Lyari,” said the PPP Karachi division deputy information secretary adding that being a small ground, they could not invite all workers.

Minister for Kutchi Abadis Javed Nagori said that the people of Lyari were peace-loving; however, a small number of criminal elements had made them hostage, destroying the image of the area.

He said that the people of Lyari would once again prove on Sunday that they were loyalist of Bhutto’s ideology and would come in large numbers to attend the gathering.

Moreover, the residents of Lyari would not only hoping a revival of PPP but also hope that PPP leadership would make important announcements for the betterment of people in Lyari.
