There is news to the effect that the PPP government is going to declare Benazir's death anniversary as a public holiday. What an outrage There is no public holiday on the death anniversary of the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam, none on the death anniversary of Allama Iqbal and none on that of Shaheed-e-Millat Liaqat Ali Khan. Is Benazir a greater leader than the most venerated personalities listed above? Certainly not Everyday we see her being projected as such to the great disgust of a large majority of people. Her photographs are now being displayed even above those of Quaid-e-Azam's, in the President House, Prime Minister House and Governor Houses. Cities, airports, hospitals and roads are being named after her even though all these were built with taxpayers' money. Even the Income Support Fund, meant for the poor, and funded entirely by the taxpayers' money, is being named after her. If the PPP is really so keen to project her name, let them build cities, hospitals, airports and found support funds for the poor from their own funds or from Benazir's own considerable wealth. Hasn't PPP made enough capital from her death? They have a President, a Prime Minister, a government in the centre, governments in three provinces and governors in all four. What more do they want? -DR ZAHEER ASGHAR KHAN, Lahore, via e-mail, December 18.
