LAHORE – PIA is going to resume its discount ticket scheme on domestic sectors after almost two months as the likely announcement would be made in the meeting of Board of Directors of the airline to be held on Monday (today).

The national flag carrier, PIA had doubled its fares on domestic flights as new fares were applicable from November 1, 2011 and a circular in this regard was issued then to all the travel agents to observe the new fares.  It is worth mentioning here that the decision was taken at a time when Pakistan Railways was also facing severe crisis regarding its operation and a number of trains were halted due to non-availability of functional Railway engines.

As per notification PIA management had then cancelled the classes like K, M,T, N and O wherein common people could purchase the tickets on lower prices.

According to the fare details, a common person could avail the facility of travelling on Lahore-Karachi-Lahore sector against payment of about Rs 13,000 and on Lahore-Islamabad-Lahore against fare of Rs 9,000.

After cancellation of all the classes offering above-said lower fares, PIA had started offering only three classes including Economy, Economy Plus and Club Class.

Then PIA started charging Rs 27,000 as minimum fare from its passengers travelling in Economy class on Lahore-Karachi-Lahore route while Rs 17,000 from its passengers travelling on Lahore-Islamabad-Lahore route.

But perhaps passenger load was reduced due to high cost of tickets and PIA right after almost two-months of its announcement of decision was going to take back its decision of fare increase, sources in the airlines claimed.

A PIA officer seeking anonymity said that by ending discount ticket scheme the airline was facing losses because passengers had rejected national flag carrier and started travelling with other airlines.

He said actually the PIA’s Board of Directors had abolished a 50 per cent discount in fare its passengers were enjoying in the past so now it can be resumed with the approval of same board which is going to meet on Monday (today).
