KARACHI - The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (Unisame) has urged the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (Smeda) to focus on value addition units for SMEs desirous of setting up new industries with the help of technology.
In a statement President Unisame Zulfikar Thaver stressing the importance of value addition and the scope in value addition urged the chief executive officer Yousuf Naseem Khokar to direct all Smeda offices all over the country to facilitate any SME desirous of setting up value addition unit and provide all information to the entrepreneur and encourage the idea to make it happen. Smeda can obtain latest technology for value addition from the SME promotion and development institutions of China, Japan, Iran, Turkey, UK and USA who are ever willing and ready to share their systems with Pakistan.
He said there is ample scope for value addition in each and every item of agricultural produce and right from seed to the fruition stage there is room for value addition which must be exploited. Pakistan is rich in agricultural resources and with the help and support of Smeda the value addition business can get a new impetus. He emphasised that there is scope also in the recycling of by products and waste and urged Smeda to educate the prospective investors to come forward.
Unisame has initiated a programme for SMEs to draw them towards setting up new industries for adding value to agricultural produce items namely fruits, vegetables, grains, cotton, seeds and even ordinary grass.
