ISLAMABAD Dozens of teachers held a protest demonstration in front of a private TV channel office on Thursday where they demanded of the government to grant them permanent status and also give salaries to the teachers who are performing their duties without salaries. According to them, all the teachers working in schools and colleges under Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) were given permanent status on provincial level but the teachers in the Federal Capital are deprived of their basic rights. Usually, education in the capital city is considered ideal but the condition of the teachers here is pathetic, they said. The charged crowd raised slogans against the unjust system and urged President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry to take immediate notice of the issue. The teaching and non-teaching staff of Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) denounced the unjust system where on one hand, the employees fired during 1995 to 1998 are being reinstated while on the other hand, the decision for giving permanent status to the contract teachers is reversed. According to them, in January 2009, the order for the permanent status of contract teachers were released and a few teachers were given the time for three years for the professional studies including B-Ed and CT but after two months on March 25 2009, the orders regarding permanent status of teachers were taken back. They said the staff of Information Technology at various education institutions has not received salary for last eight months. The IT staff that includes 125 teachers and 162 lab staff expressed their grave concerns over the non -issuance of salaries.
