Its been 62 years that we have gained independence. We have tried and tested all forms of self-made models of democracy, dictatorship and even 'elected monarchy in our governance. But amazingly, we have never done a thing on framing political ethics, which should compulsorily be applicable to all actors of the state. Let us take a first step towards making some broad rules and ethics. Let us at least set a broad framework that includes the universal values as a basis and then add ethical traditions of different countries and cultures with due sensitivity to the ethical traditions derived from various religious perspectives. I know the next question; who will bell the cat? The answer is why cant we have an Ethics Commission in the Ministry of Religious Affairs? -AMJAD H. MIRZA, Lahore, February 24.
