ISLAMABAD The outgoing Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin on Thursday ruled out any differences with the Government, saying he resigned purely for the purpose to look after his business in a better way. While talking to media persons, he admitted he had differences with certain Cabinet members over issues like rental power plants, but denied that the same led him to leave the Federal Cabinet. He said, I want to give time to my bank and raise the capital for its survival and as a minister it was difficult for me to handle the banks matter. He said he was one of the three sponsors of the bank, adding that earlier the bank managed to execute even without his active participation but now it needed capital for existence. It is the matter of existence of the whole bank and being a Finance Minister, it does not behove me to raise capital for my personal bank, he said adding that he wanted to set a good example of governance by resigning from the post of Finance Minister. Tarin said that there was no accountability law for the leaders in Pakistan. Bad governance is one of the biggest problems of the country and beyond it there are several institutions including Pakistan Railways and PIA, which are damaging the economy, he added. He said that he didnt suggest any name to Prime Minister Gilani for the slot of finance minister. The Prime Minister has assured me that next finance minister will implement our nine-point economic agenda and tax reforms, he added. Tarin said, There is need to enhance the revenue collection and increase the tax to GDP ratio up to 20 percent. Beside improvement in tax collection, he stressed for austerity measure to reduce government expenditures and involvement of private sector in the countrys development to ensure sustainable economic growth. The Finance Minister said that he wanted to resolve circular debt issue before his departure and in this regard a meeting was scheduled for February 27 in Karachi. He said that Government should devise comprehensive strategy for minimising the use of gas and furnace oil in generating electricity, adding that the country was having other resources to generate electricity and they would be more beneficial in the long run.
