LAHORE – Following a trend set by outgoing IG Punjab Javed Iqbal, the newly appointed Provincial Police Chief Haji Habib ur Rehman has pledged to hold open court in his office at Punjab Police Headquarters on daily basis. Mr. Habib-ur-Rahman will address the open courts beginning on Tuesday, from 9:00 am to 10 am.
According to a circular issued on Saturday, the provincial Police Chief issued a letter to all RPOs, CPOs, DPOs, SDPOs and In-charge field officers to arrange open courts in their respective areas so that the complainants from remote areas could also be facilitated. The IGP further directed the field police officers to furnish the reports on issues resolved through the open courts on fortnightly basis for consecutive monitoring purpose.
He instructed the officers that no negligence and delay will be tolerated in providing timely justice to the people. In case of non-availability of IGP, DIG (Operations) Punjab, will hold the open court at PHQ. Similarly, in the fields the next in-command officer will do the same in case the officer in-charge was committed elsewhere.
Earlier, former IG Punjab and current FIA DG Javed Iqbal had started holding open court on daily basis from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon. However, he could not manage to address the courts regularly and the responsibility was delegated to Additional IGP Rafiq Hassan Butt or former PSO to IG Mr. Dev. “I think the same episode will be repeated here; the open court with no IG but the practice itself is healthy if it is implanted practically,” an official from the Open Court Branch told this reporter.
