PESHAWAR - To press the government for giving equal representation to women in the parliament, dozens of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf women activists hailing from Fata staged a demonstration here at Sher Shah Suri road outside the Press Club on Monday.
The demonstrators was led by PTI Fata chapter Women Wing leader, Ayesha Gulalai, along with a dozen of women activists and members of civil society organizations from tribal region. The participants were holding placard and banners, demanding equal representation of women in the parliament from Fata. They chanted slogans in favour of their demands.
Talking to media persons, Gulalai demanded of the government to provide equal opportunities to women hailing from Fata in parliament and provincial assemblies. “Tribesmen have rendered enormous sacrifices for this motherland, despite that discrimination being carried out with them, she lamented.
Gulalai said that the tribal people were deliberately kept backward in all fields, and a large number of women had lost their family members due to the ongoing volatile situation in Fata. Despite having great role in the establishment of peace, she said that the women are not being taken into confidence in decision-making process.
The PTI women activists said that it could not be a difficult task to establish peace in Fata, if the government was ready to give equal opportunities to tribal women in the parliament. “We want only education and health facilities, and employment opportunities in Fata,” the tribal women demanded. They, however, lamented that the tribal women were not in the political mainstream courtesy the successive governments in the past. We being Pakistani citizens and tribal women only demand our constitutional rights, which is proper representation in parliament, they demanded.
