Fazl seeks more US efforts

ISLAMABAD - Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazalur Rahman said on Tuesday that the US should not confine itself to ensuring peaceful presidential elections in Afghanistan but instead redouble efforts for meaningfully re-engaging the Afghan Taliban. Fazl said in a meeting with the Special Representative of the Secretary General on Afghanistan Jan Kubis.
He said that the Ambassador linked the peace in Pakistan with peace in Afghanistan. “This is why it is very important that Pakistan continues to play its role of facilitating Afghan-led and Afghan owned peace talks,” he said.
Kubis said that UN will continue to be engaged with Pakistan and other regional countries for a lasting solution for peace and stability in Afghanistan.
He underscored the UN commitment to a strong bilateral relationship with Pakistan based on respect and mutual interest. He said that the UN supported a more stable, secure, and prosperous future for the people of Pakistan.
 Fazalur Rahman praised the UN for realizing the importance of Pakistan role in facilitating and helping afghan internal reconciliation process.
He said that they fully support Afghan reconciliation and urged the UN to remain engaged in supporting the internal dialogue process. He said that there will be hiccups but all stakeholders should continue the path of talks and do not get discouraged.
The UN delegation comprised Joanna Nathan, Special Assistant to the SRSG, Raana Rahim, Head of Office UNAMA Pakistan.
