Imaginary misapprehensions

Every political leader, editor, journalist, columnist and letter writer dismisses Kalabagh dam saying we must not override regional apprehensions. This is to admit that regional apprehensions are factual and not imaginary. This is also an admission of ignorance on the subject. One of the main apprehension of Sindh is that Kalabagh dam will reduce water flow in the Indus. Dams do not reduce river flows but add to it by storing and saving flood waters. Only barrages take away water from rivers through canals and there are seven of them at the Sukkur Barrage. The other major apprehension is that since the Kalabagh dam would be located in Punjab, Sindh would not get more water from the dam. After the Water Apportionment Accord of 1991, though, misappropriation of water has been made impossible by any province. I especially request the Sharif brothers and Imran Khan to stop posing as the champions of Sindh when they are actually speeding up desertification of Sindh by opposing the Kalabagh dam. -KHURSHID ANWER, Lahore, via e-mail, January 12.
