January 13, 2009 is really an epoch making day in the history of Chitral as well as Pakistan, because the tough first phase of the project with its 8.5 km long tunnel got completed. Chitralis around the world are celebrating this day with great enthusiasm. The people of Chitral should not forget the people on this day who contributed the most in this regard. Our first MNA from Chitral Mr. Jaffar Ali Shah for the first time raised the voice in the National Assembly. In the seventies, Z. A Bhutto started the project, but with the fall of his government, the project also mysteriously fell by the way side. Later, Pervez Musharraf inaugurated the project on July 8, 2006. We the people of Chitral are thankful to the former President for his dedication and interest in this project. In military planning, this project would play a very important role as it connects Pakistan with friendly economic super power China. Another aspect is that with the completion of this project our country can expand its security. Before this project, our district was totally disconnected form rest of the country for six month of the year. Pakistan can now extend its road links to Central Asian countries from where we can import natural gas and electricity. -BASHIR HUSSAIN AZAD, Chitral, via e-mail, January 13.
