LAHORE- The City lawyers were on Tuesday assured by their new boss that he would do everything possible for their betterment. According to a cardiology survey, most of these lawyers are suffering from cardiac problem as a result of anxiety and workload stress, Shahzad Hassan Sheikh said while talking to TheNation. The newly-elected president of the Lahore Bar Association said that his team would keep intact their good relations with the Bench. Mr Hassan recognized the importance of self-accountability as a tool of success in every field of life, especially legal profession. The Association will try its best to resolve the financial and medical problems of the lawyers, and we would not rely on any fake promises and claims, he said. Shahzad Hassan resolved to assist the lawyers by securing funds for their libraries, saying new lawyers could best benefit from the endeavour. The new body, said Mr Sheikh, would contact the federal and provincial governments for the finance assistance. Giving details of the bodys manifesto, the LBA president said the City lawyers would be motivated to register themselves in order to get benefit from the Benevolent Fund, which has been set for lawyer families. He said after assuming the charge he came to know the Rs 30 million of the Benevolent Fund still not used. Just about 150 lawyers have so far been registered to benefit from the Benevolent Fund. We would motivate the youngsters and the seniors alike to get membership. The LBA president said the young lawyers would be promoted but they should also follow their seniors. Responding to a question, he said the internal cabinet meeting had also decided to accelerate the process of prosecution that would help in providing earliest justice to the litigants and therefore quarters concerned would be contacted and asked by the body to speed up process of prosecution. He added: Implementation of the court orders should be done anyways. Police should be taken to task by the judiciary for their lethargic attitude in producing records and witness in the courts. On the issue of former District and Sessions Judge, he said it was mishandled as the concerned authorities should have resolved the problem (complaint by lawyers) soon after they had brought the misbehavour of Judge Sheikh Zawar Ahmad into their notice. He said he would look into the matter of distribution of Rs 3 million amongst the injured lawyers to ascertain if there were still some lawyers waiting for the compensation (the lawyers were injured during the protests launched for the transfer of Judge Sheikh Zawar Ahmad.) Concluding his talks, Shahzad Hassan Sheikh said the new LBA body would make the promised residential colony for the lawyers a reality.
