SIALKOT

The father of a proclaimed offender was killed in police custody because of alleged police torture at the Pasrur City Police Station Saturday morning as he was arrested for sheltering his son, wanted by the police in a double murder case.

Rashid alias Bhola had killed two persons in Pasrur city over an old enmity two years ago and he was still at large. On a tip-off regarding the presence of the PO at his home in Pasrur city, a huge contingent of police had raided the house but could not found the PO. But, the police arrested Mehmood Ahmed, 65, father of the accused, over providing shelter for him and registered a case on January 24, 2014.

However, the aggrieved family told newsmen at Pasrur that the police brutally tortured the old man during Friday night and killed him in the police station. The family was of the view that instead of arresting the accused, the police had arrested his father and killed him after implicating him in the “false and fictitious” case.

They staged a protest demonstration placing body on the road in front of Pasrur Civil Hospital. They also staged a sit-in there and demanded immediate registration of a murder case against the police.

Meanwhile, the senior police officials negotiated with the protesters and assured them of provision of justice and ordered a departmental probe into the issue. After the assurance, the heirs and other protesters handed over the body to the police for autopsy and dispersed peacefully. The police then shifted the body to Pasrur Civil Hospital for this purpose. However, no case was registered against the policemen.

On the other side, Sialkot District Police Officer Muhammad Gohar Nafees denied the allegations and said that Mehmood was suffering from chest diseases which caused his death. He added that he had already ordered a strict departmental probe into the matter under the supervision of SP (Investigation) Sialkot Asad Sarfraz Khan.

Likewise, Federal Minister for Planning and Development Zahid Hamid has also taken a serious notice of the incident. He directed the DPO to probe into the matter and ensure provision of justice.
