Amateur Squash Championship starts today

Lahore -  The Punjab Food Authority Amateur Squash Championship will get underway today (Friday) here at the Royal Palm Golf and Country Club.  

Addressing a press conference here at the Royal Palm Thursday, Punjab Food Authority (PFA) Director General Noor-ul-Amin Mengal said: “The Under-13 and Under-15 squash players from the across the country will exhibit their prowess during the four-day championship, which will conclude on January 29. The top players of the event will be referred to the Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) and they will be groom and trained by them for national and international events.”  

He said the Punjab Food Authority, in collaboration with corporate sector, will promote the game at junior level. “We will hold a number of junior squash events and hunt fresh talent, which will be trained under Sports Board Punjab (SBP) and the best among them will be provided national and international exposure and training, so that they may serve the country in a befitting manner.”  

Mengal lauded the efforts of the SBP for promotion of sports at the provincial level. “The SBP under its dynamic leadership has been contributing well towards sports promotion across Punjab. I hope they will also focus on training and grooming Punjab squash talent.” 

He said all the participating players would stay at the Sports Board Punjab hostels, where they would be provided each and every necessary facility. He also announced that the Punjab government has issued funds to complete the state-of-the-art squash complex in the Nishtar Park Sports Complex in six months time, which would help in organising national and international squash events there. 

 “I hope like cricket, the SBP will also establish a squash academy there, which will prove very beneficial to raise the standard of the game,” Mengal concluded.
