rawalpindi - Scores of furniture traders on Thursday gathered at Murree Road near Naz Cinema to stage a protest demonstration against police for not combating the surge in street crime.

The protestors blocked the road from both sides and burned tyres. The road blockage triggered a massive traffic jam and posed problems for commuters and pedestrians.

They also chanted slogans against Deputy Superintendent of Police Waris Khan Circle Zaigham Abbas and Station House Officer Police Station Waris Khan Yasir Kiyani and demanded Regional Police Officer to initiate departmental action against the DSP and his subordinates for their failure in controlling street crime.

According to details, scores of traders following the call of Anjuman-e-Tajran Khanna Road President Mian Asif shut down their businesses, gathered on Murree Road to protest against the police.

The protestors carried placards and banners with slogans such as “Protect traders from dacoits”, “Surge in street crime is unacceptable” and “We want suspension of DSP and SHO”.

Addressing the protestors, ATKR President Mian Asif and General Secretary Faisal Butt said the armed gangs of dacoits have been plundering cash and mobile phones from the traders in various areas of Chahsultan and Naz Cinema. They said in the last couple of days dacoits had targeted six traders and snatched cash and mobile phones.

They lamented that SHO PS Waris Khan had advised the victims not to mention theft of money and mobile phones in their complaint.

“We request RPO Wisal Fakhar Sultan Raja to take action against DSP Waris Khan Circle Zaigham Abbas and SHO PS Waris Khan Yasir Kiyani for their inability to control crime,” said Mian Asif.

Meanwhile, DSP Zaigham Abbas arrived at the protest site and negotiated with protestors.

He told them that police had held 8 robbers and were interrogating them to find out about the other accomplices. He said that SHO Yasir Kiyani had assumed charge three days ago and would devise a comprehensive strategy to protect the traders.
