Government mulls 100pc increase in agri-support price

ISLAMABAD - Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Livestock (Minfal) Nazar Muhammad Gondal said Friday that due to increasing behaviour of agri-inputs the government was considering a 100 per cent increase in agriculture support price. Addressing the inaugural ceremony of Pilot Project for Adaption of Water Saving Cultivation Pot organized by National Agriculture Research Center in  collaboration with Environment Measurement Services (EMS) Japan he said, "The government is focusing to bring more and more area under crop cultivation to achieve self-sufficiency in food commodities." The water saving cultivation pot technology is being established by Minfal in collaboration with Environment Measurement Services (EMS) Japan which would help increase forestation in arid areas. Nazar Muhammad said that the government was paying special attention towards agricultural research to further increase per hectare crop production by providing agri-inputs like seed, fertilizers and sufficient water for crops to meet the future demands of the country. He said that development of infrastructure was another factor to promote the agri-based industry in the country as well as to increase agri-exports of the country to make the economy sustainable. About the wheat situation, Gondal told mediamen that a shipment carring about 32 thousand tons of wheat had arrived, while more shipments were scheduled soon. He informed that sufficiant wheat stock was available for smooth supply of flour adding that millers were purchasing wheat from open market as the government had not started supply from official godowns. He said the government was determined to see farmers sucessssful and prosperous because progress of national economy was attached with the wellbeing of farmers. Gondal said the government had increased subsidy in DAP fertilizers up to Rs 1000 per bag and outstanding dues of about Rs 49 billion of cane growers were also paid to the growers. The Minister said that through water saving cultivation pot about 20,000 plants would be planted in Karachi, Bahawalpur, Quetta and Islamabad, adding that this technology would save water. He said that colition govt would complete its tenure and PML-N would remain part of the govt. The Minister also planted a tree in NARC premises to start monsoon plantion campaign.
