On World Population Day, the federal Minister for Population Welfare, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, arranged a show at the PM Secretariat, Islamabad where a female dancer performed a dance on a theme song. The media gave front-page coverage to the event next day with a headline saying "Dance Performance vexes Gilani". According to details of the news, the PM sat through the entire dance performance but later expressed his displeasure, instructing his staff not to repeat such a thing in the official functions. PM Gilani belongs to a very pious family of Multan and his ancestors were revered Makhdooms of the area who shunned all evil. Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan should have known this and avoided the activity that embarrassed the PM so much. Most people of this country would fail to understand what connection the World Population Day could have with a dance performance. Instead of watching the entire performance, the PM should have stopped the programme right when the dancing diva had been brought in the arena. -MUHAMMAD AZHAR KHWAJA, Lahore, via e-mail, July 15.
