After the long march

With the end of the lawyers' long march to Islamabad, the people of Pakistan must now be spared the agony and anguish of living in misery of a hope for better tomorrow emerging from the reinstatement of the deposed judges and the ouster of the President. Both hopes must be buried now, once and for all. The federal and provincial governments should be put to the task of governing. Very few days are left in the first 100 days deadline of the federal government with nothing to show in terms of performance to the people. Let the remaining days be used for some useful planning to at least resolve the nerves-shattering issues of high prices, unemployment, poverty, electricity outages, water scarcity, and law and order. The parties in power must be restrained from speaking in public and making tall claims that raise high hopes. They have already done that enough. It is now time for them to sit in their offices and work for the people. The honorable Prime Minister must lead his cabinet members while Asif Zardari and his party men should avoid press conferences for some time now. -SCHEHRYAR AHMED, Gujranwala, via e-mail, June 16.
