KARACHI - Bootleggers in connivance with Excise and Taxation Department (ETD) officials are running their notorious business calmly in the City, sources claimed. Source privy to the matter revealed that cases had been reported in which said department showed arrest of the culprits, otherwise mostly cases were solved under the table. Source pointed out that negotiations could be possible after the registration of the case as they changed the stuff of sized bottles of liquor. Source citied the recent case took place here on 23rd Jun at around 9 pm, when a ETD police team led by Additional Excise and Taxation Officer (AETO) Dawood Kolachi in Old Racecourse located in Freer Police Station, intercepted a vehicle carrying sixty bottles of imported liquor in five boxes, worth of Rs 0.1 million. The said police team took away the vehicle and seized but the said accused got back the sized bottle back with the help of personal secretary of the minister. Similarly, on 12 April 2009, an Excise Police Inspector Mushtaq Khokar along with his police party, conducted a raid in Defence Area and arrested a vice-president of a privet bank, and recovered a box of foreign liquor carrying twelve bottles, and registered an FIR against him. By dint of political pressure, the said bank employee not only was released but the said ETO was transferred. Likewise, on 27 August 2008, another Inspector of ETD Ijaz Baloch arrested an accused named Banaras Khan and seized his auto rikshaw which carrying five boxes of foreign liquor, but on the directive of the said secretary, the official released the accused and only showed the recovery of the box. However the case was registered against unknown persons. It is worthy of mention that today, when Pakistan will join the world to observe World-Anti International Anti Narcotics Day today (Friday), where the different concern departments including Anti Narcotic Force (ANF), Excise and Taxation Department and others will burn the seized narcotics to show their performance to the people, as well as to the world, but the reality is totally changed.
