LAHORE There is a need for creating civic sense among the general public and media should play its role in this regard. Addressing a seminar, speakers including Justice (r) Nasira Javed Iqbal, Punjab University Professor Dr Ahsan Akhtar Naz, City Traffic Police Chief Captain (r) Ahmed Mubeen and senior journalist Farrukh Sohail Goendi, Salman Ghani, Ashraf Sharif said, By civic sense, we mean abiding by the laws, respect of the human being, adoption of moderate behaviour and keeping the environment clean. The seminar was conducted under the aegis of Hameed Nizami Press Institute of Pakistan. HNPIP Director Absar Abdul Ali was the moderator. Nasira Javed, Mubeen said that media, with a great influence, could bring revolution in the society, however, Mr Goendi said that media was not the sole agent of change. They are the intelligent brains while political parties can shape the societys norms, Goendi added. Nasira criticised the mullahs, saying they were not the masters of Pakistan. No one can dare to talk about family planning at TV shows. We have to tell those Mullahs now that they are the people who were against the creation of Pakistan. Dr Ahsan said that religion was the first source of bringing positive change in the society. Now the television had become the sole character-building institute in our society which was a harmful trend, he added. He urged the parents to play their role in making a sound personality of their children. Captain (r) Mubeen highlighted the traffic issues in the city regretting that no one was ready to obey the traffic laws. We have distributed 0.4 million pamphlets and delivered dozens of lectures to students about traffic awareness but received no fruits in this regard. Believe me, the society has become a hard nut to crack and we are also the part of this society, he added. To questions from all sides of the participants of the seminar about the suspension of traffic activities for hours during VVIPs movement, he replied that they could do nothing but to obey the Blue Book. However, he added that the traffic was not being suspended during the movement of CM as per his own (CM) orders. The other ministers and VIPs of the provincial government were also met with the same criteria, he added. Farrukh Sohail said that true and brave leadership could bring revolution. We need the leaders like Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, Maozay Tung and Kamal Ataturk. Salman Ghani, chief reporter Nawa-i-Waqt, emphasised on increasing the literacy rate. He said education of women was the need of the hour.
