William Morris, a one time political philosopher, had rightly described about cosmetic democracy: If art which is now sick to live and not die it must in future be of the people, for the people, by the people; it must understand all and be understood by all. The man who shouted from every rooftop 'Democracy is the best revenge had, as a human being and that too made of sands of Sindh, without realizing what kind of U-turn he was taking in Pakistans treacherous politics deleted democracy to the folder of spam of 1990 era politics from the tomb of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, equalizing his strong political philosophy to mere statements from the Man of Steel. In the race for Azad Kashmir elections our champions of democracy brought back democratic culture to a level where the sham democracy could get a chance to breath but not live. The prelude to Azad Kashmir electioneering simply demonstrates a greater degree of intolerance what to talk of greater collective struggle for genuinely conceived a democratic culture that goes well with society of Pakistan. Two strong leaders Mian Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari in the manners comfort to power and be in power very conveniently buried the spirit of democracy while keeping its body alive. The process of democracy remained quite painful in those societies where the order of the day remained democratic and democratic alone and respect for law remained way of life .Take examples of Europes grown up democracies, scripted democracy of the United States and practiced democracy of India. It was certainly not a surprise for me to hear and I am still hearing speeches of two strong men - Mian Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari - and they have indeed not learnt any lesson. While one in his greater wisdom is making attempts to take on strong Army and the other opting for the role of sentry to the General Headquarters of Pakistan Army. In both the cases strong political rivals are unnecessarily dragging the armed forces in their game. The game which has no rules but to clinch trophy of power. In the year of 2011 after rendering many sacrifices, making relentless efforts for democratisation of the society through scripting or verbal promises conduct of democrats and civilian leadership simply presents a very bleak picture for the future of a healthy democracy. The process of democratic culture is very painful and remained painful. Just pull a leaf from history. Examine one Pundit Jawharlal Nehru, how an autocrat transformed into a leader of millions of untouchables of India. In Churchills diction: Many forms of government have been tried and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time. A careful balance between independent institutions and mutual respect within the law and constitution; an independent judiciary that upholds the rule of law; a fair democratic system with regular free and fair elections accepted to all, with inclusive politics and a level playing field for all political parties; a credible opposition whose role is respected; all political parties accepting responsibilities, fair play and justice and non-violence are a must for healthy democracy. There should be peaceful policy-based debate and dialogue (not just polarisation and one side blaming the other and vice versa all the time). Here starts the tragedy of Pakistans democracy. It never had level playing field. And no one appears serious in creating a level playing field which can ensure legitimate participation of every citizen of Pakistan into a transparent and credible democratic system. The co-authored 'Kulyat-e-Munir by Rana Sanaullah and Raja Riaz and joint production of 'Nuskha Hai Wafa by Asif Ali Zardari and Mian Nawaz Sharif seem to a be a big leap backward for a glorious objective of strong democracy and a smooth transformation of society into an acceptable and workable democratic culture. Vote on 2013 is not very far off. And this time the democrats will conduct elections. Their approach, style, behaviour and conducting authority for next general election must reflect aspirations of the people of Pakistan and not temporary 'Jor Tor.
