TOBA TEK SINGH - Residents of dozens of villages, located along Khewra and Pandori minor canals took out a rally on Saturday in protest against the suspension of irrigation water in Khewra minor canals, worst electricity loadshedding and exorbitant hike in the prices of fertilizer, pesticides, diesel and seeds. They reached here on tractor trolleys and motorcycles from their villages and marched on Shorkot Road and Jhang Road. They also staged a sit-in outside TMA complex as a result of traffic remained block for more than two hours. On the occasion, while addressing the gathering, PKC District President Ch M Sarwar, Tariq Mahmood, M Zubair, Ch Ghulam Bari, Amer Amin, Khalid Mahmood and M Ramzan stated that the supply of irrigation water in the canals had been suspended for the last 45 days as a result their crops had been ruined. They lamented that farmers had been forced to migrate from their villages to other areas to earn livelihood for their families. They warned that if their problems were not resolved they will stage a sit-in outside DCO office soon. They also condemned the Irrigation Department for getting registered cases against 50 farmers on the fake charges of irrigation water theft and demanded withdrawal of these cases. Later, they also set up a token hunger strike camp on Jhang Road where Toba Assistant Commissioner (AC) Sikandar Zulqurnain held talks with their leaders and assured them that their problems would be resolved soon.
