GILGIT  -The Pakistan People’s Party-led Gilgit-Baltistan government on Thursday presented its annual budget for the financial year 2013-14 with a total outlay of Rs 24.5 billion.

Presenting the budget in Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly in Gilgit Tuesday afternoon‚ Finance Minister Muhammad Ali Akhtar said Rs 1.5 billion had been allocated for non-development expenditure. He said Rs 9.950b had been earmarked for development expenditure.

The Gilgit-Baltistan finance minister said top priority was given to power sector for which Rs 2.14 billion would be spent. Another Rs 0.975 billion had been allocated for transport and communication‚ Rs 0.625 billion for education, Rs 0.616 billion for housing and physical planning and Rs 0.432 billion were earmarked for health sector. The legislature unanimously passed a resolution greeting Muhammad Nawaz Sharif for assuming the office of prime minister of Pakistan.  Tributes were also paid to President Asif Ali Zardari for holding free, fair and transparent elections. Another resolution was passed condemning the killing of eleven tourists and one Pakistani guide at Nanga Parbat base camp.
