PESHAWAR - Chief of Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) Maulana Fazlur Rahman has said that initiating a high treason case against Pervez Musharaf under Article 6 of the Constitution will open a new Pandora box, which will not be limited to former dictator.

About talks between the Afghan Taliban and America in Doha, Qatar, Maulana Fazl said that JUI-F was in favour of unconditional dialogue between the two parties, as dialogue between any rival groups always remained unconditional. "We will support any sort of unconditional talks between the Afghan Taliban and US," Maulana said while talking to the media here at the JUI-F central office at Ring Road on Tuesday.

He also strongly condemned the killing of foreign tourists in Gilgit and asked the Gilgit-Baltistan government to immediately arrest the killers and award them exemplary punishment.

He also warned the incumbent government and other stakeholders against attaching killing of the foreigners with any political ambitions or double standard aimed to get ride of it. "These matters are very much sensitive and before taking any sort of responsibility should think twice and then make any decision," he added. To a query, the JUI-F chief said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Pervez Khattak had met with him as a good will gesture and it should be very much clear that the JUI-F was not having any intention to join the PTI-led provincial government.

About recent announcement of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif regarding a strong accountability system, Maulana said that commenting on it before taking any practical step and devising a clear-cut policy for accountability was quite useless.

JI warns govt against

showing any weakness

in Musharraf’s trial

Staff Reporter from Lahore adds: Jamaat e Islami Ameer Syed Munawar Hasan has said that if the government shows any weakness in former President Pervez Musharraf’s trial for treason, the headstrong establishment will make the elected government a failure.

Addressing the participants of JI workshop at Mansoora on Tuesday, he said that if Pervez Musharraf was sentenced under Article 6, no adventurer could dare to set aside the Constitution in the future.

Munawar said that the masses had high hopes from Nawaz Sharif government but its performance so far had been poor.

Drone attacks are continuing, making a mockery of the country’s sovereignty, he said. The government could not provide any relief to the people on loadshedding while the Federal budget prepared under the IMF dictation has led to price- hike, adding, to the miseries of the people, he added.

He said that the US was trying to benefit from Pakistan’s strategic position in order to get control over the Central Asian states resources, to check China’s increasing role in the region, to build India as regional police man and also to humble Iran. The US, he said, itself was holding dialogue with the Taliban but was refraining Islamabad from adopting that course.

Munawar said that the secular lobby was busy in a poisonous propaganda against the creation of Pakistan and the Pakistan ideology. Besides, he said, different TV channels were giving advertisements to prove that the US was heavily contributing to Pakistan’s development and progress. He said that the religious and political parties would soon join hands to launch a movement to foil this propaganda.

Referring to the Karachi situation, he said that Karachi was a representative City not only of Pakistan but the whole Islamic world, which had fallen prey to the MQM’s extortion and target killings. The independence and human rights of people of Karachi had been usurped, he said.

He said that nobody could dare to touch a common MQM worker, not to speak of killing an MQM MPA. He said that a war had begun between the workers and the leadership of the MQM in which the common citizens were being victimised.

“The government and the security agencies were aware of the great game going on there.” It was the duty of the government to take effective steps for the protection of the life and property of the citizens, he added.
