LAHORE In the inaugural Fauji Cement Bridge Championship that came to a conclusion after four competitive days of intense bridge activity at the bridge tables of Islamabad Club, it was the Candy Land Team who secured the top position and thereby ensured taking home the gorgeous trophy and the allied wholesome cash prize of Rs 150, 000 attached to it. Along the way to final victory the odds were awesome and the challenge put up by other teams was unnerving, yet this experienced team used their skills to curb all advances of competitors to the title. The Candyland team comprises players of substance and consists of M Ismail, Zia Ullah Beg, Hassan Askari, Hamid Mohiyuddin, Mubashir Puri and Rashid Jaffer who combined exceedingly well demonstrating good bidding , impressive defense and excellent table play and won with a score of 239 points. They received the trophy and Cash Prize from the chief guest Lt. Gen. Javed Alam (retired) Managing Director Fauji Cement at an impressive closing ceremony held immediately at the conclusion of the Tournament. The Team Captained By Tariq Aziz and comprising of Javed Khalid, Saeed Akhtar, Shauq Hussain, Asfandiyar Hussain, Sattar Kochin wala and Massod Mazhar were the runners up with 195 points. A significant feature of their performance was Asfandiayars play. He was the youngest player of the tournamentd an played flawless bridge and in fact better than his father who is a national champ. Data Steel came third with 190 points and closely followed by Aces from Lahore who ended with 185 points. The Team that gave a consisitant performance but was unfortunate in the end to be amongst the prize winners was team of DIG police Mr. Ghalib ali, Assad Maqbool, Suleman Bokhari, Rana Kamal and SHakir Ali. Brig Zubair Tahir General Manager Fauji Foundation was the force behind organizing this event and ensured use of modern technology for scoring purposes. Ihsan Qadir, an international Tournament Director supervised the championship. The pairs Award for the 1st Position went to Rashid ul Ghazi and Tehsin Ghee wala, Tariq Aziz and Seed Akhtar were 2nd while Ghalib Ali and Assad Maqbool came 3rd in their very 1st outing in a bridge Championship.
