LAHORE Secretary General Jamaat-e-Islami Liaquat Baloch has said that the ruling parties were deceiving the masses regarding constitutional amendments and independence of the judiciary. In a press statement issued here Thursday, he said had these parties been sincere, they would have revived the constitution as on October 12, 1999. He said these parties had committed the blunder of contesting the elections in spite of the Emergency, which was now creating obstacles for them at every step. Baloch said the masses expected the rulers to give up duplicity and table the draft of the constitutional amendments before the parliament. He stressed that a change of name of the NWFP should be in line with the peoples wishes as the ANP stance was not acceptable to the entire population in the province. He said Sarhad or Afghania could be acceptable to all people, and remarked that the ANP should have no objection to Sarhad as the ANP veteran Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan was known as Sarhadi Gandhi. He urged the PML-N not to yield to undue pressure from the ANP on this issue and instead give due weight to the public opinion. He said President Zardari must address the joint session of the parliament at the start of the parliamentary year to fulfil constitutional requirement.
