QUETTA – A Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) worker was shot dead in Khuzdar just after the arrival of BNP-M President Sardar Akthar Mengal, who returned to Pakistan from Dubai after ending his self-exile.

According to police, Manzoor Mengal was in a medical store when unidentified gunmen opened indiscriminate fire and escaped from the site, leaving Manzoor dead.

Police shifted the dead body to hospital for medico-legal formalities.

Talking to The Nation via phone, Akthar Mengal said that the killing was a warning for BNP-Mengal of staying away from taking part in upcoming elections.

To a query, he said that BNP-Mengal was a political party which raised voice for the rights of Balochistan at all democratic forums. “We have called party meeting on Tuesday in Karachi to discuss whether to take part in elections or not,” he added.

Akthar Mengal said that situation in Balochistan was graver than ever. “Decomposed dead bodies of Baloch missing persons are increasing and situation is worse than the last year when I appeared before the Supreme Court in missing persons case.”

Meanwhile, Chief Justice of Balochistan High Court, Qazi Faez Esa has said that they are ready to face criticism but the criticism should be constructive.

He asserted this while addressing a Full Court Reference which was held here on Monday headed by Chief Justice Balochistan High Court and was also attended by judges and lawyers, Bar Associations hailing from different districts and lawyers.

Chief Justice said that the ratio of judgements of cases as compared to registration of cases in 2012 remained high which was a good sign.

About 3014 cases were registered in Principal Seat Quetta while 465 cases in Sibi Circuit Bench last year, he said. Similarly, he said that the total number of cases which were disposed off were 3730.  He said that so far the number of cases in Principal Seat Quetta and Sibi Circuit Bench were 4643 and 251. Referring to the statistics of district judiciary, he said in 2012 total 38920 cases had been registered in which 38214 cases were disposed off while till Dec 31st, the number of pending cases were 855.

Addressing on the occasion, General Secretary Supreme Court Bar Association Javed Iqbal Raja said that Bench and Bar were two angles of one institution.

He said that three components of delivering justice were Bench, Bar and parties, thus the difficulties between Bench, Bar and parties should be removed so that the parties should be provided cheaper and timely justice.  Prosecutor General Balochistan Abdul Wasay Tareen said that high court headed by Chief Justice of Balochistan disposed off pending cases due to which the number of pending cases have been reduced to a great extent.  He also thanked Chief Justice for providing plot for construction of prosecution building in civil court Quetta.
