BEIJING (AFP) - Nearly 5,500 children have been left without their parents following the massive China earthquake, either because their parents were killed or cannot be found, state media reported Sunday. Xinhua news agency, citing sources at the national disaster relief headquarters, said at least 5,498 children were alone following the May 12 quake, which has killed more than 62,500 people and left nearly 24,000 missing. The report said some of the children's parents could be migrant workers who have not been able to return home following the disaster. Disaster relief officials also said nearly 4,800 elderly people had been left alone, either because their relatives had been killed or because they had been separated from their families, Xinhua reported. Officials have assigned staff to care for the children and elderly people, and to help them look for their relatives, the report said.
