Reshuffle in PPP Karachi on the cards

FAHEEM RAZA & NISAR MEHDI  KARACHI - Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Karachi Division has decided to reshuffle the party structure in Karachi City to increase its strength at grass-root level in 18 towns of the city, sources in PPP told The Nation here on Sunday. It is pertinent to mention here that after the assassination of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto the PPP vote bank has increased immensely and after MQM, the PPP had got more seats than other parties in February 18 elections in the city. To keep intact the vote bank and materialise the sympathy vote, PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari has appointed Syed Faisal Raza Abidi as the new president of Karachi Division. After taking the responsibilities the new Karachi Division president, with the consultation of PPP central leaders, has decided to reshuffle the party structure in the city to organise the party not only in its suburbs but also in all the towns of the city. It was decided that in the first phase more than 300,000 new memberships would be issued in Karachi in just one month. Sources in PPP said that after the target of new memberships was achieved, the PPP would hold party elections at Union Council (UC), Town and City levels to elect the office-bearers. The PPP candidates had won recent general election from NA-250 Defence, Saddar, Punjab Colony, TNT Colony, Gizri, NA-253 Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, NA-249 Methadar, Kharadar, Tower Soldier Bazaar and Garden and NA-240 Saeedabad. In some areas, they lost with narrow margin and alleged that their political opponents rigged the election. To maintain the PPP vote bank in these areas and also to increase the party strength in other areas of the city, PPP Karachi Division has decided to set-up party wards and units in all the UCs and towns of the city. One of the key purposes of re-organising the party's structure is to get more seats in the 2009 local bodies elections, they said.
