Parliament's supremacy

Without supremacy of the parliament, the concept of parliamentary democracy is mere humbug. While the superior judiciary is fast asserting it's independence, our elected representatives, despite slogans of all power to the people, lag behind. The people have the right to self -govern through their elected parliament. Supremacy of our legislature will become a reality if the CoD is implemented and the constitution of 1973 is restored sans distortions introduced by Zia and Musharraf in the fundamental law of Pakistan. The President has already passed the ball to the court of lawmakers. An independent parliament will be more effective in exterminating the menace of extremism and terrorism now posing an existential threat to the state. I have been waiting for more than 30 years for a parliament that has the guts to stand up and be counted. Time at your disposal, dear parliamentarians, is dangerously limited. You have nothing to lose but your chains. -B.A. MALIK, Islamabad, via e-mail, May 15.
