ISLAMABAD - Sluggish Pakistan A beat Afghanistan by five wickets in the first One-day International at Diamond Cricket Ground here on Wednesday. Batting first, Afghanistan were soon in trouble as both their openers fell cheaply; Noor Ali was caught by Talha on the bowling of Sohail for 6 and his partner Karim Khan Sadiq went without scoring on the bowling of Sadaf when the team total was 6. M Shezad was trapped Lbw of Sadaf for scoring just two runs. Then came captain Nowroz Mangal at the crease and played sensibly to keep one end in tact while wickets fell continuously from the other end. Asghar Stanikza was caught by keeper Sarfraz off the bowling of Talha when his score was 8. Gul Badin Niab joined the skipper but also fell victim to Talha when his score was 11. Talha was the pick of Pakistan A bowlers grabbing three wickets for 29 runs in 7.3 overs, Captain Sohail Tanveer and Sadaf Hussain got two wickets apiece by giving away 33 and 25 runs respectively. Promising left arm bowler Zulfiqar Babar and right arm leg break bowler Yasir Shah also took one wicket each. Set to chase a relatively easy target of 153 runs to win in 50 overs Pakistan A started their innings in a slow style as batsmen wasted a lot of deliveries and did not score even single to rotate the strike. Shan Masood and Sharjeel Khan started the innings for Pakistan A but Shan was soon returned to the pavilion when Pakistan had made 21 runs. He scored 5 runs Umer Amin who has experience of Test cricket came to bat at one-down position. Amin with Sharjeel took score to 76 before Umer was out for 29 of the bowling of Dawlat. Pakistan A batsmen then started playing cautiously. Fine bowling from the Afghan bowlers, ably supported by their fielders caused panic to batsmen who kept on throwing their wickets away. Afghan ground fielding and catching was superb, the fielders never allowed any batsmen to take sharp single and did not allow overthrow run to the Pakistan players. Sharjeel played a fine knock of 47 runs which included 8 fours. Naved Yasin made unbeaten 18 and wicketkeeper batsman Sarfraz Ahmad 21 not out guided Pakistan A to victory in 39.5 overs for the loss of five wickets.
