An avoidable tragedy

The day the Pakistani government lifted a ban on the use of CNG in large cars, a school can caught fire from a fault CNG kit and caught fire. The blaze left sixteen children and a school teacher dead, and a community dumbfounded by grief, and a devastating loss, caused by a totally avoidable accident. The children aged between 4 and 10, were on their way to school, when it is thought that a spark caused by a switch between petrol and the natural gas mechanism, caused the vehicle to catch fire, with the children trapped inside. Passers by rushed to help, but were unable to open the doors. The driver succeeded in getting away unharmed.
Compressed natural gas is used routinely, as a cheap alternative for more costly petrol and diesel. The kits installed, are of varying quality and safety. In this instance, a CNG canister exploded, causing the accident. Whether the explosion was caused by heat, faulty wiring, or some other factor, it is difficult to say. The fact that there is no way to be sure of the safety of such devices, only adds to the uncertainty and fear. While all major leaders have expressed sorrow, none of them have as yet been to Gujranwala to comfort a bereaved community, nor announced any measures of policy scrutinisation to ensure such a harrowing tragedy does not occur again. The ban on CNG in private cars must also be enforced. Alternatively, regulations introduced in its proper safety, if a total ban is not implementable.
The common occurrence of incidents, where motor vehicle owners follow unsafe practices, leading to tragedy, is not acceptable in this day and age. Motor vehicle examinations and licensing is necessary on a rotating basis to ensure that the conveyance is road-worthy. Meanwhile, as in most such situations, parents must be cautioned to ensure that the transporter to whom they entrust their children, is of good repute and reliable in terms of safety. In Pakistan, more and more, it is a rule of every man for himself, with the state leaving ordinary citizens to battle with a standard-less system and no security of life or limb.
