At least 28 people have died in southern India due to heavy rains, the Press Trust of India reported Wednesday. Most of the deaths in coastal Tamil Nadu state were due to wall collapses or electrocution, police said. Thousands of people living in coastal areas were moved to safer places and given shelter in schools and temporary camps. Hundreds of houses were damaged because of a heavy downpour and strong winds, as authorities instructed fishermen not to go to sea.
