The dream has just begun

"I have a dream" is a popular slogan culled from a historic speech of Martin Luther King, Jr that he made on August 28, 1963 during the American Civil Rights movement. In this speech, King spoke of his desire for a future where blacks and whites among others would coexist harmoniously as equals. His dream has finally come true with the election of Barack Obama as the first African-American President of the United States after 45 years. We also had a dream when Pakistan came into being on 14th of August, 1947. It's been 61 years now and we are still struggling to find the pieces of our shattered dream. Dreams can only come true if a nation has a sense of direction and destiny, a fact proven by the election of Obama. If we keep on running aimlessly for another hundred years in all directions, it will not lead us to the realization of our dream. Unfortunately we have reached a point where we are saying "I had a dream" now. -DR IRFAN ZAFAR, Islamabad, via e-mail, November 13.
